Health

For man to live the life he so much desired of, he needs to be in good health. Man is reduced to nothing in illhealth. We should therefore strive to have good health.

Most of man's illhealth is brought unto him by himself. Our lifestyles is the main cause of our illhealth.

The things we eat are what primarily brings us illhealth. To take it further, even the things we see, hear and think of make us sick.

To generalize everything concerning health, man should eat good food, exercise regularly, avoid hearing and seeing things that trouble him and think positive.

Healthy Eating

Healthy eating can be seen as the taking in of food that helps maintain or improve one’s health. Healthy eating is necessary for the prevention and control of diseases. A healthy diet is also needed to maintain a body’s optimum functioning.
However, the misconception of following strict nutritional philosophies, staying unrealistically thin, depriving oneself from food and putting on unnecessary weight is not healthy eating.
Healthy eating involves taking in appropriate quantities of food substances which includes water.

Facts About Healthy Eating

Eat enough calories: This does not mean eating too much calories. Take enough calories to maintain your balance between calorie intake and expenditure. That simply means you should not eat food that your body will not use. The amount of calories you take depends on your age, sex, weight and physical activity.
Eat a wide variety of foods: Healthy eating should involve eating a wide variety of foods. Each food type has its own amount of unique nutrient composition, that which you might not find in other food types. It is therefore advisable to take in a wide variety of foods so as to acquire all these hidden nutrients.
Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables contain very essential vitamins minerals and other nutrients needed by the human body. The WHO recommends 400g of fruits and vegetables a day. Fruits and vegetables also prevent a lot of diseases.
Eat a lot of whole grains and legumes: Whole grains and legumes have been known to be rich in dietary fibre which prevents certain types of cancers. Polished grains should be minimized or avoided.
Drink a lot of water: The human body is made up of 75% water. It is an important component of diet. Water is the means of transport within the human body therefore its importance can’t be overemphasized.
Exercise regularly: This might not be directly related to food but to derive the full benefits of a healthy diet one needs to exercise regularly and be active. This actually aids digestion and metabolism of the body. It also reduces cholesterol levels in the body.
Limit sugary foods: Sugar should be avoided or limited in diet for the following reasons. Sugars contain high calories and may cause obesity; sugars are also linked to cardiovascular diseases. Sugar is also known to suppress the immune system and limit the body’s ability to fight diseases. Sugar is linked to tooth decay. Sugar can also produce acid in the stomach which may lead to other medical complications.
Avoid food additives: Food additives such as preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colours and flavourings have been known to cause health problems such as increasing the risk of cancer. Foods that contain these additives should be avoided.
Avoid contaminated food: Food which contains pathogens would always go a long way to harm the body. Good hygiene should be observed when dealing with food. For example fruits and vegetables should be washed before eating.
Watch your salt intake: While moderate amount of salt might be good for the body, a high intake of salt can lead to high blood pressure. In this case sea salt is better than bleached salt.
Watch your meat intake: Though meat is a source of complete protein, its intake should be monitored. Meat contains high amount of cholesterol with may pose health problems to the body. The digestion of meat in the human body is slow causing a lot of toxins to be produced, which also lead to medical problems.

Ways to eat

Take time to chew your food: Chew your food slowly, savouring every bite. We tend to rush though our meals, forgetting to actually taste the flavours and feel the textures of what is in our mouths. Digestion of carbohydrates starts in the mouth and that should not be skipped by swallowing and hasting chewing.

Avoid stress while eating: When we are stressed, our digestion can be compromised, causing problems like colitis and heartburn. Avoid eating while working, driving, arguing, or watching TV (especially disturbing programs or the news). Try taking some deep breaths prior to beginning your meal, or light candles and play soothing music to create a relaxing atmosphere.

Listen to your body: Ask yourself if you are really hungry. You may really be thirsty, so try drinking a glass of water first. During a meal, stop eating before you feel full. It actually takes a few minutes for your brain to tell your body that it has had enough food, so eat slowly. Eating just enough to satisfy your hunger will help you remain alert, relaxed and feeling your best, rather than stuffing yourself into a “food coma” eating till you feel sick and uncomfortable.

Eat early, eat often: Starting your day with a healthy breakfast can jumpstart your metabolism, and eating the majority of your daily caloric allotment early in the day gives your body time to work those calories off. Also, eating small, healthy meals throughout the day, rather than the standard three large meals, can help keep your metabolism going and ward off snack attacks.

Avoid drinking water whiles eating: This something most people find difficult to do. Drink water thirty minutes prior to a meal and 30 minutes after and avoid drinking whiles still taking in food. Taking in water whiles eating tends to dilute the enzymes responsible for digestion hence reducing their efficacy.
